Joy Cowley was inspired by the “button project” undertaken by the children of Moriah school and their message of diversity and acceptance.
The project began back in 2008 when the children (aged 5 – 12 years) collected 1.5 million buttons to represent, and remember, the children killed in the Holocaust. When the school closed in 2012 the button collection was handed over to the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand to further the children’s vision of a memorial. The Children’s Holocaust Memorial launched on 15 November 2018. This book documents the journey from idea to full travelling exhibition. (From The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand.)
