Love it or hate it, you can’t escape it — ENCANTO fever is everywhere!

With that in mind, most libraries are going to be presenting some kind of ENCANTO programming, which presents us with an excellent opportunity to teach about Colombian culture.

Encanto and Culturally Informed Programming

Rosie Camargo

Storytime Solidarity is thrilled to have our very own, award-winning, Colombian librarian extraordinaire — Rosie Camargo — on the Solidarity Team as our Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Pre-ambling

We’re thrilled to provide this Storytime Solidarity Allyship Event.

Previous events include our event on Jewish Allyship with the Association of Jewish Libraries and our April Asking Autistics Event.

DEI Basics

You may recognize Rosie Camargo’s name from one of the SS team’s most widely shared posts about Cinco De Mayo. While Rosie’s background is Colombian — not Mexican — she offered some helpful tips to make sure that diverse programming is culturally informed and sensitive.

Rosie Camargo (she/her)

Miss Rosie,” as she’s known to her storytime audiences, works as a Youth Spanish Language Specialist and Spanish Program Coordinator for the Niles Maine District Library in Niles, Illinois.

Rosie’s a first-generation immigrant from a large Colombian family. She is a native Spanish speaker and brings an encyclopedic knowledge of Spanish-language children’s literature from decades as a book reviewer. She’s also a board member for RAILS (Reaching Across Illinois Library System), an EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) committee member, and a member of SPARK (Spanish Programming and Resources for Kids).

Rosie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and we’re so lucky to have her on our team. We are excited about all the ways we will learn from her about how to provide culturally informed programming.
