Written and illustrated by: Katie Yamasaki.
At first glance this picture book is about a child and her father bonding while baking together. But when you look deeper into it, the book is actually about an incarcerated parent who has come home after he has been released. This parent is bonding with this child to reclaim a relationship. The beginning of the book shows the child waiting patiently for him to be home. This part of the book is wordless and small hints are given about what the child is doing, such as a memory box and a calendar that is checked off by the day. The waiting theme is reinforced as they need to wait for the bread they are baking to be ready. This book is beautifully written and I recommend it to any child who is going through this sort of situation where they need to rebond with the parent or family member that has been away.
