Red

Red by Jan De Kinder book cover.

Written and illustrated by: Jan De Kinder.

Translated by: Laura Watkinson.

When Tommy’s cheeks turn red during recess the school bully finds a reason to taunt him about it. The whole class thinks it’s funny and they all join in until eventually one classmates start realizing it’s not really funny anymore. She’s noticing that Tommy is very hurt  and now she wants to help but she’s scared of the bully. She eventually finds it in herself to raise her hand  and let the teacher know what was happening.

What I like about this book is that it feels realistic. Children don’t notice sometimes that the person being picked on isn’t laughing along. And the bullying just gets worse and worse.

This is a very simply written book with very delicate and sweet illustrations.
