“You’re never too old to learn.” Mary Walker

This is the empowering story of Mary Walker, her life as a slave, her families journey to be free on Freedom Road and her dream to learn to read. After the Emancipation Proclamation, ex-slaves had to find their way on their own which included a lot of work for little money. As time went on, Mary had a family and became a pillar in her community. Although Mary desperately wanted to learn to read, there was no time because the jobs available to her were very low paying. She would marvel at books and wish she could read them. At the “young” age of 114 years, her life had changed.

This picture book is written for anyone, at any age 🙂 , who wants to learn about Mary Walker.
