Fifty years ago, I did not have picture books that represented me as an Asian American. I still get teary when I find beautiful books like this knowing that this generation will not know my pain of never being represented. In light of growing hate crimes against Asian Americans due in part to the pandemic, books like this one are even more important. Phi is such a talented author. If you only know him as a children’s author (of which he is phenomenal), you are missing out because he is an incredible poet as well.
