26 January is ‘Australia Day’ – often called ‘Invasion Day’ or ‘Survival Day’ by First Nations people.
It is a good time to highlight the amazing children’s picture books created by amazing First Nations authors and illustrations.
For years, First Nations illustrators have incorporated traditional art styles. Recently, I have noticed an increasing number of children’s picture books which include First Nations language within the text.
The majority of these books are published by ‘mainstream’ publishers. These publishers, almost always, include a land acknowledgment statement and reference the Traditional Owners in their place of publication. It would be good if this was done in more books written by others, and not just by First Nations people.
